Madhur Bhandarkar Slams Bollywood’s Vanity Van Culture: Eminent film director Madhur Bhandarkar, who received the National Award for his films, is once again sparking debate in the Hindi film industry through his candid remarks about the emerging culture of “Entourage” and the rising costs of film production. At the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026, Madhur Bhandarkar was candid about the double standards adopted by film producers in dealing with the demands of film actors.

Producers vs Actors: A Double Standard?
In his discussion program, Madhur Bhandarkar exposed the glaring double standard in the Hindi film industry. He pointed out that film producers complain about the high number of vanity vans demanded by film actors, but they do not hesitate to add even more vans if they have to sign a high-profile actor.
According to Madhur Bhandarkar, this is symptomatic of the overall lack of discipline and unity in the film industry. He argues that film producers do not follow their own rules and bend them to sign high-profile actors.
Lack of Unity in Bollywood
Madhur Bhandarkar pointed to the basic flaw in the system: there is no consensus among producers. He suggested that if producers unite and draw clear lines in the sand in regard to the salary of the actors and the cost of the entourages, perhaps we can control the unwholesome bidding war that is going on as everyone tries to go solo.
He also pointed his finger at the producers who try to lure actors away from their competitors by offering them higher salaries and better perks, thus fueling the fire in the already volatile bidding war.
In regard to the cost of the entourages, Madhur Bhandarkar pointed to the fact that the cost of maintaining the entourages is high. He asked the rhetorical question of whether producers are paying for these costs without any clear parameters.
Madhur Bhandarkar’s Suggestion
Madhur suggested having a standard template for staff costs in order to curb unnecessary spending. Otherwise, the financial burden will continue to increase for the producers.
Another important aspect that Madhur Bhandarkar touched upon is the fact that the commitment level of actors in taking up bold roles seems to be lacking. He commended Ranveer Singh for his commitment to his work in taking up the role in the film “Dhurandhar”, stating that good performances take years of concentration and hard work.
He also suggested that perhaps bold roles in films such as “Pushpa” or “Animal” may not be accepted by many stars in the Bollywood industry because they are too bold for them. However, stars such as Ranbir Kapoor have shown their commitment to unusual scripts, which have helped them become stars.
