According to the company’s official announcement, the encrypted messaging option will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

The update is huge, and it was shared through the platform’s support page and in-app alerts to inform the users about the upcoming change. End-to-end encryption was designed to make sure that only the sender and recipient could read the messages and it will provide outside access, even from Meta itself.

Why Meta Is Ending the Feature

Dina El-Kassaby Luce, a spokesperson from Meta, has explained that the decision was primarily based on low adoption among users. According to the company, there are very few people in Meta who actually enabled the optional encryption setting on Instagram DMs.

End-to-end encryption required both users in a conversation to activate the feature. If it is enabled, then messages and calls would remain private and inaccessible to third parties.

However, due to the limited usage of the feature, the Meta team has decided that continuing to support it on Instagram is not necessary.
