Pennum Porattum takes us to the village of Pattada, and the narrative revolves around Charulata (Raina Radhakrishnan). Charulata is an independent young woman who became a victim of moral policing and slut-shaming. At the same time, her boyfriend’s dog, who is named Suttu, is accused of having rabies. The story, which started as a normal day, gradually soon transforms into a chaotic hunt for the dog and a parallel character assassination of Charulata.
The story is smartly depicted, as it involves a layered satire on social prejudice, herd mentality, and the moral hypocrisy of small communities. The film cleverly uses this double narrative that is human paranoia and animal innocence to underline how society reacts impulsively without understanding the truth.
Direction and Narrative Style
Rajesh Madhavan has tried experimenting with storytelling, as he presented several sequences from the perspective of animals. These moments are very unique, and it feels grounded and emotionally balanced. In contrast, scenes that are coming by human reactions often carry exaggerated tones, which highlights the absurdity of social judgement.

Raina Radhakrishnan has done a good job to make a strong impact as Charulata despite limited screen time. Shanooj Alanallur as Sujathan, Varsha Valsan, and Satheesh Pulikka also work very well to add noteworthy performances. Rajesh Madhavan appears in the second half in a familiar character type, and he manages to add to the film’s tonal balance.
Technically, the film stands out. Sabin Uralikandy’s cinematography is very smart to use the wide lenses and higher frame rates to create an absurdist visual texture. The sound design is intricate. Visual effects and production design are also impressive, but the few sequences involving animals, chases, and staged chaos are disappointing.
Strengths and Limitations
Pennum Porattum is trimmed to around 120 minutes that feels tighter, especially when compared to its festival version, and removes some narrative distractions. The film shines in its rooted setting, and it uses clever thematic layering and moments of subtle humour. However, there are a few characters in Pennum Porattum that feel exaggerated and occasionally stretched, which dilutes the emotional and political messaging.
