Pharma Web Series Review: The Indian OTT space is evolving as it is experiencing a strong wave of high-quality regional storytelling. And, in this, Malayalam content continues to lead from the front. The latest series that is creating a buzz is “Pharma”. Pharma is now streaming on Jio Hotstar, and it has a total of 8 episodes. The show marked the digital debut of Mollywood star Nivin Pauly. The series is directed by P.R. Arun, who brings rare authenticity to the project thanks to his real-life experience as a former medical representative. Parma is set in Thrissur and it starts as a grounded portrayal of life inside pharmaceutical sales. The series is smartly written as it captures the relentless pressure that is faced by medical representatives. It takes us to unrealistic targets, humiliating language from superiors, and the constant grind to survive in a cutthroat corporate ecosystem. Binu Pappu is the abusive boss who perfectly embodies this toxic hierarchy.

As the story progresses, Nivin Pauly’s character climbs the corporate ladder. However, he soon uncovered a horrifying truth. The narrative sees a dramatic change when the series exposes how multinational pharmaceutical companies allegedly treat the Indian population as “lab rats”. This storyline serves as the base of this corporate crime thriller as it follows one man’s fight against an inhuman profit-driven system.
Pharma Performances: A Strong Ensemble Cast
Nivin Pauly
Nivin was very good, as he delivered a restrained and layered performance. He shows his trademark charm and subtle humour but gradually sheds it to portray a man who is burdened by moral responsibility. This role was challenging for him, and it marked a clear departure from his “chocolate boy” image.
Rajit Kapur
Rajit Kapur plays a crucial role. His performance is competent, but the native Kerala actor could have added more regional authenticity.
Shruti Ramachandran
She emerges as the emotional backbone of the series. Shruti arguably has delivered the most effective performance, as it keeps the ground of the narrative emotional.

Aalay Kapoor is seen as the arrogant corporate CEO as he convincingly portrays entitlement and cold ambition.
Supporting Cast
Binu Pappu shines in the early episodes. Narain and Muthumani offer solid support. However, their characters feel underutilised as the story progresses.

What Works
- Relatability: The first episodes are beautifully crafted, and it strongly resonates with those familiar with sales or the medical field.
- Technical Excellence: Abhinandan Ramanujam’s cinematography is visually sharp, and the background score by Jakes Bejoy (mentored) adds constant tension.
- Social Relevance: The series bravely explores medical crimes. It exposes an uncomfortable but necessary subject that is rarely addressed in Malayalam cinema.
What Doesn’t
- Pacing Issues: After the first four episodes, the narrative of Pharma slips into a slow and stretched second act.
- Predictable Finale: The climax feels flat. It lacked the emotional or narrative punch that was expected from such a serious theme.
- Weak Emotional Payoff: There were side plots that failed to establish a deep emotional connection.
Direction & Overall Take
Director P.R. Arun was excellent, and he deserves appreciation for tackling such a risky subject. His firsthand experience was needed to add realism to the dialogues and settings. However, the tonal shift from grounded realism to cinematic poetic justice feels uneven. Personally, I feel even though Pharma is marketed as a medical thriller, it ultimately works better as a corporate crime drama.
Final Verdict: Should You Watch Pharma, a watchable One-Time Drama
Pharma has some pacing flaws and an underwhelming finale, but it remains an important series due to the questions it raises about ethics in healthcare. If you are someone who enjoyed shows like Pill, then Pharma is a slower but relevant regional alternative for you.
