‘Pretty Lethal’ Film Review (2026): Directed by Vicky Jewson, the action thriller film “Pretty Lethal” has premiered on Prime Video with a promise of an exciting blend of ballet and action-packed thrills. The film has a concept centered around “ballerinas kicking ass”, and from the start it immediately sparks curiosity among action lovers.

However, though Pretty Lehthal has a very intriguing setup and a talented ensemble cast, it somewhat struggles to deliver on its core promise that results in a largely underwhelming cinematic experience.

‘Pretty Lethal’ Plot

The film takes viewers to a group of ballerinas travelling to Budapest for a competition. Their journey takes a dark turn when it is seen their bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere, which forces them to take shelter in a mysterious inn. This eerie refuge is run by Devora Kasmier, who is played by Uma Thurman, who is also a former ballerina with hidden ties to a criminal underworld.

The film at first started as a survival thriller quickly, but it soon lost its momentum due to weak storytelling. The narrative sets up high stakes because the ballerinas need to escape before it’s too late. However, it fails to build tension or urgency.

Cast Performances

The film has a very promising young cast in the form of Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, and Avantika Vandanapu. Each actor has done a good job to bring some level of charm to their roles, but the performances are ultimately limited by a weak screenplay.

Maddie Ziegler’s character, named Bones, is positioned as the central figure. However, her performance is a huge disappointment. It lacked an emotional depth that is needed to make the character compelling. Lana Condor’s princess has moments, but her arc remains largely unexplored.

Avantika stands out with her energetic presence, especially during lighter moments. However, at times it feels that her character is reduced to comic relief and has no meaningful development. Uma Thurman’s Devora Kasmier is one of the film’s biggest disappointments.

What’s Good

The few positives of Pretty Lethal are its core concept. The idea of the film was great, as the makers wanted to combine ballet with action sequences, and it had a significant potential that could have resulted in a unique genre blend.

The film also benefits from a talented cast as they together try to elevate the material, even when the script doesn’t support them. Certain character dynamics between Chloe and Zoe hint at emotional depth.

Additionally, the setting takes us to a remote inn with hidden dangers that offers an interesting backdrop that could have been effectively utilized to create suspense.

What Could Have Been Better

Unfortunately, the negatives of the film easily outweigh the positives. The biggest issue lies in the screenplay by Kate Freund. Throughout the film there are many characters that are poorly written, and they feel like shallow archetypes rather than fully realized individuals.

The action sequences should be the film’s highlight, but they are surprisingly dull. The film struggles due to poor choreography, uninspired camerawork, and lacklustre editing that results in scenes that lack excitement and impact.

Conclusion

If you are someone who is a fan of action thrillers, then this film may feel like a missed opportunity and just not a satisfying watch.
