The Last Frontier Story
The Last Frontier starts with a gripping sequence where we see a prison transport plane crash in the icy wilderness of Alaska. This becomes the reason for chaos as dangerous prisoners escape into the tundra. Jason Clarke leads the series as U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick, and he is now tasked to hunt down the prisoners and also protect his small town from total collapse.
The Last Frontier plot gets interesting when one of the escaped inmates turns out to be a CIA-trained assassin. He holds top-secret intelligence. Haley Bennett joins as Sidney, who is also a CIA agent, and she is sent to cover up government secrets. The show feels good and recalls Con Air’s adrenaline, but as episode 1 went by, it felt a little stretched.
Stellar Performances in an Icy Landscape
Jason Clarke was good, as he delivered a powerful performance. He presented to us the perfect balance of toughness and vulnerability as Remnick. His chemistry was effortless with Simone Kessell. Simone Kessell played Jason Clarke’s wife, and they together add emotional depth to an otherwise cold narrative. Haley Bennett’s Sidney is sharp and enigmatic, and on the other hand, Alfre Woodard commands the screen while playing a high-ranking intelligence officer.
The Last Frontier’s cinematic view is exceptional, and it deserves credit for its cinematic ambition. The opening crash scene, which is set to Elvis Presley’s Unchained Melody, is both haunting and bold. Only two episodes have been released till now, and so far, The Last Frontier appears to be a mix of good and bad scenes.
Where the Story Starts to Crumble
The Last Frontier stories are very promising, but as soon as we move forward, there is a poor screenplay. The first episode of The Last Frontier is amazing, but episode 2 loses direction. The storyline feels stretched, and the episodes could have been tighter to offer that tension and impact. We feel that The Last Frontier’s pacing is very sluggish because the dialogue feels very repetitive.
Even the visuals fail to convince. The series is set in Alaska, but it was filmed mostly in Quebec. This artificial landscape is a big setback to the film, and it never captures the raw beauty of the Arctic frontier. The CGI-heavy sequences, which include a redundant car-flipping stunt, look very boring, and it is less convincing with each repetition.
Final Verdict: A Missed Opportunity
Overall, the first two episodes of The Last Frontier feel like an ambitious idea that is stretched far beyond its natural limits. Apple TV+ was aiming for a gripping Alaska survival story, but due to poor scripting and stretched scenes, The Last Frontier ended up with a drawn-out drama struggling to maintain momentum.
Though the show has some notable strong performances and cinematic ambition, the series never recovers from its narrative frostbite. In the end, The Last Frontier is the perfect proof that even the most promising adventure can lose its way in the snow if not executed properly.
This show is for you if you like watching a good cinematic view, but if you are looking for an intense scene in The Frontier, then unfortunately, you will be disappointed.
