Space Gen: Chandrayaan starts with the aftermath of Chandrayaan-2’s failure as it captures the emotional fallout that is faced by ISRO scientists under intense public and media scrutiny. The narrative covers internal blame games, political pressure, international competition, and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Space Gen: Chandrayaan doesn’t really take us deep into the technical aspects, but it chooses a people-first approach that highlights the mental stress, self-doubt, and quiet determination that fueled India’s eventual lunar triumph at Station Shiv Shakti, which is the Moon’s south pole.
Space Gen: Chandrayaan Performances: Nakuul Mehta Holds the Fort
Nakuul Mehta is back on screen after a very long time, and he didn’t disappoint. He has given one of his most restrained and emotionally grounded performances as Arjun. In the role of a scientist who is haunted by the mission’s failure, Nakuul did phenomenal work. His character is the son of a Kargil War martyr, and it provides the strongest emotional anchor of the series. This motivation to strengthen India through technology adds depth to Arjun and to the story.
Shriya Saran is seen in the role of Yamini. She is effective, but it feels that she is underutilised. Her personal arc, which includes motherhood, feels more symbolic than impactful. Danish Sait’s Jairam initially brings comic relief. However, the abrupt tonal shift to seriousness feels uneven. Prakash Belawadi is seen in the role of the ISRO chief, and he touches upon caste-based struggles.
Writing and Direction: Rushed and Surface-Level
In the last few years, TVF has come forward as a production company that produces nuanced storytelling like Kota Factory and Panchayat. However, Space Gen: Chandrayaan surprisingly falls short of that standard. The biggest mistake was to condense a four-year national journey into five episodes, and it proved to be its biggest flaw. Important moments feel like checklists, and they are not the fully realised scenes. The media’s role in shaping public perception, political interference, and mental health issues like panic attacks are all addressed.
All together, the series often felt like a collection of notes stitched together that is constantly racing against time and doesn’t really allow emotional beats to breathe.
What Works and What Doesn’t
What works well in the Space Gen: Chandrayaan is the decision to spotlight the emotional toll on scientists. The show is smartly plotted to effectively remind viewers that behind every national achievement are individuals who are working with fear, pressure, and self-doubt.
Space Gen: Chandrayaan struggles with the lack of depth across most characters and loud & exaggerated performances in political roles. Moreover, an over-serious tone works against the show, as it doesn’t have any impact. The writing rarely rises above the surface, and this makes the series feel forgettable.

Ultimately, Space Gen: Chandrayaan gives us an emotional, well-meaning series. However, due to weak writing, it struggles to find a stable orbit. Nakuul Mehta’s performance and the humane perspective deserve appreciation, but factors like rushed pacing and shallow character development spoilt the party for the series.
