Chiraiya Series Plot
‘Chiraiya’ takes us to Lucknow, where it revolves around a seemingly respectable joint family that is well led by Sukumar Bhramar (Sanjay Mishra). The story takes a dark turn when Arun (Siddharth Shaw), who was raised with care and values by his sister-in-law Kamlesh (Divya Dutta), gets married to Pooja (Prasanna Bisht).
On their wedding night, Arun ignores Pooja’s request to wait due to ill health. Instead, he ends up forcing himself on her. The series is then followed by a disturbing portrayal of abuse within marriage. Pooja continues to suffer, and Kamlesh slowly realizes the truth, and she starts to question her own beliefs. The narrative is very sharp, and it eventually evolves into a powerful journey that is filled with awareness, resistance, and confrontation.
Cast & Performances
The performances are one of the strongest pillars of Chiraiya. Divya Dutta has done an excellent job to deliver an exceptional performance as Kamlesh. She portrays her emotional transformation with depth and nuance with ease. Prasanna Bisht is equally compelling as Pooja. She bought the much-needed vulnerability and inner strength.
Sanjay Mishra was needed to add gravitas to the role of the family patriarch. He decently reflected the contradictions within his character. However, Siddharth Shaw couldn’t do much, as he appeared average and lacked the intensity required for such a complex role.
Direction
Chiraiya takes a restrained and realistic approach. The show doesn’t really appear to be overly dramatic or preachy, but the direction is so smooth that it allows the story to unfold naturally. The focus remains on the emotional and psychological aspects of the characters.
However, the direction slightly falters in the final episodes, where we see that certain scenes are being exaggerated and less organic.
