Directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the movie has become a subject of much discussion. While some people find it fascinating in the way it takes them on a musical journey through the life of one of the greatest artists, others claim it to be a “whitewash” of his controversial personality.

Michael Story Overview
The plot of the movie shows the evolution of Michael Jackson from the child star in the band Jackson 5 into a world-famous artist known all around for hits such as Billie Jean and Thriller.
Nevertheless, the movie does not touch upon the controversial moments of the latter period of Jackson’s life due to restrictions associated with the earlier signed non-disclosure agreement. As a consequence, the endpoint of the story is in the late 1980s – long before those events took place.
Cast Performance
Among the best elements of the movie is, without doubt, Jaafar Jackson. He received much acclaim due to his incredible resemblance to Michael: from the voice and mannerisms to the dance style. In some sequences he disappears in his role and makes us see the real Michael Jackson.
In addition, there are also some supporting actors who give their best efforts. Thus, Colman Domingo performs as Joe Jackson, whereas Nia Long portrays Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller acts as lawyer John Branca in the movie.
What Works
The most interesting things happen in musical scenes where Jackson’s original vocals are used in the recreation of iconic Jackson performances. These scenes are pure fun for those who have loved the King of Pop since his early age.
Michael is visually appealing: from costumes to stage design and from music to dance. One can easily notice that the audience will get a concert-like experience from watching the movie. It can be perfect for those who are interested only in music.

What Falls Short
Though visually pleasing, Michael suffers from a lack of depth. There have been many criticisms that the film is too sanitized, avoiding any hard-hitting questions that need to be asked about Jackson as a human being. Through the absence of some of the major controversies, it appears incomplete, even unrealistic at some point.
The narration in the film seems to hurry through one of his greatest moments without going into his personal emotional state during that time. Rather than a biopic, it ends up looking like an extended video montage of his life highlights.
In addition, failing to address the serious accusations against him has made the film have a “borderline fatal flaw”.
Final Verdict
“Michael” can be considered a very visually appealing but narratively shallow biographical movie. First of all, this picture is very interesting due to the great music performance and exciting reconstruction of the important moments of the artist’s life. Nevertheless, the lack of discussion about the problematic pages of Jackson’s biography does not allow this movie to become a great portrait of the singer.
In my opinion, this movie will satisfy only the most devoted fans who will definitely enjoy listening to Jackson’s songs.
