Plot Summary
This episode starts right after the news of Yian and Hee-ju’s controversial contract marriage became public. As rumors start spreading through the entire kingdom and business sectors, Yian and Hee-ju find themselves humiliated and disrespected from all directions. Palace officials start questioning the credibility of Yian, and Hee-ju faces ridicule in business arenas.
Although the tension is increasing, the emotional connection between them becomes deeper. Yian always tries to think about the safety and dignity of Hee-ju, and vice versa, despite their internal pains. The romance between them seems true since both individuals are ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of each other’s happiness.

The plot gets more intriguing when Jeong-woo turns his back on his own family and joins hands with Yi-rang. Jealousy and obsession as the driving forces behind his actions make the whole betrayal even more heart-wrenching. At the same time, palace corruption continues to play an important role in the show, with powerful individuals using their skills to demolish Yian once and for all.
The episode ends on an emotional note with Hee-ju requesting a divorce in order to protect Yian from being utterly ruined by the scandal. Indeed, this heart-wrenching end makes viewers impatiently wait for the continuation.

Remarkable Performances
IU proves to be one of the most talented actresses on the show. In particular, she successfully conveys Hee-ju’s emotional exhaustion, inner strength, and vulnerability. IU manages to impress with every humiliating scene and emotional break-down.
Similarly, Byeon Woo-seok gives one of the best performances throughout the entire season. The emotional restraint of Yian progressively turns into frustration as he sees how the love of his life is humiliated before everyone.
The portrayal of Jeong-woo’s betrayal deserves a separate mention as well since Lee Sang-yeop manages to avoid creating a purely negative character. In addition, other supporting actors, including many others, perform well as well.

What Works in Episode 9
The strength of Episode 9 is its emotional storytelling. Each act of betrayal, argument, and sacrifice is meaningful in relation to the plot. The chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo-seok remains the best feature of the series.
Moreover, the palace politics are successfully conveyed. Tension prevails in every scene, while the royal environment, stylish clothes, candlelight interiors, and heated confrontation create a cinematic feel for the show.
Lastly, the direction and editing are worth mentioning in Episode 9. In particular, betrayal flashbacks and emotional scenes are filmed perfectly.
