Champion Plot Overview: A Promising Idea, Poorly Executed
Champion takes us to the post-independence Hyderabad, Champion. The film follows Michael, who is a young man who dreams of playing football in London. Circumstances pull him into the Bhairanpally uprising. Here, villagers fight against the atrocities of the Nizam and the Razakars. Michael is stuck in this conflict, and he secretly delivers weapons to hold on to his sporting ambitions.
On paper, the story promises a blend of patriotism, personal aspiration, and historical struggle. However, the film only explores these themes at a surface level, and it somehow fails to fully commit to the emotional or narrative depth that is required to make them impactful.

Performances: Effort Without Impact
Roshan Meka was effortless as he gives an earnest performance and clearly puts in the effort. He looks good on screen and tries to resonate the responsibility of a demanding lead role. However, his age and physicality work against the character. It was very difficult to convincingly accept him as a larger-than-life protagonist. Many times in the movie, Rosha comes across as too young for the gravitas the role demands. That said, Roshan shows potential, but the role choices could have been better.
Anaswara Rajan is seen as the female lead, and she had a limited role. Her dubbing feels awkward from the start. But, performance-wise, she does what is required. The character itself lacks depth, and it ultimately offers very little scope to leave a lasting impression.
Among the supporting cast, Nandamuri Kalyan Chakravarthy was good, but she suffers from weak character writing. KK Menon is shockingly underutilized in a brief and inconsequential role, which makes his casting feel like a missed opportunity.
Direction and Screenplay: The Biggest Weakness
Director Pradeep Advaitham was handling the story, screenplay, and dialogues, and he struggled to maintain narrative engagement. The film opens with a promising historical setup. But the first half quickly becomes dull and uneventful. There are many scenes that were meant to build emotion or tension that fail to land, as it includes the interval, which lacks any real punch.
The second half fares no better. One or two scenes are staged competently. And the climax and message-driven conclusion feel routine and uninspired. The core issue lies in the lack of conviction in the writing, emotional beats, and conflicts.
Music and Technical Aspects
Mickey J. Meyer’s is the highlight of Champion. The song “Gira Gira Gingiraagirey” stands out, as do a couple of other tracks that work visually. The background score is amazing, as it is serviceable but inconsistent.
Madhie ISC’s cinematography is a clear asset, and it gives the film a polished and visually appealing look. The editing was done by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao, which could have been tighter. The film drags noticeably in several portions. Production values are very neat and appropriate for the film’s scale.
