Haiwaan Akshay Kumar in Villain Role: The much-anticipated thriller ‘Haiwaan‘ is causing quite some excitement, especially after director Priyadarshan came clean that Akshay Kumar was never his first choice for the film’s villain. Director Priyadarshan stated that Bobby Deol was his first choice to play the role of the antagonist, while Akshaye Khanna and Suniel Shetty were also considered during the casting process.
Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are seen in Haiwaan, which comes as a complete shift from Priyadarshan’s recent comic projects. The film is called a dark and stylish action thriller revolving around a cat-and-mouse chase between the hunter and the hunted. The film is scheduled to release on September 11, 2026.
Bobby Deol Was Priyadarshan’s First Choice for Haiwaan
It has been stated by Priyadarshan that Bobby Deol was his first choice as the actor to play the role of the antagonist against Saif Ali Khan. However, Bobby Deol was not happy about playing the role of the villain. Then, Akshaye Khanna was considered, and even Suniel Shetty came under the director’s consideration.
But the selection process of the film took a twist as Priyadarshan casually told Akshay Kumar about his project Haiwaan while making Bhooth Bangla with him.

Why Akshay Kumar Took the Role
Priyadarshan also stated that he did not visualize Akshay Kumar as part of the casting because of the recent association of the actor with the comedy genre. However, Akshay Kumar’s dedication to the part changed the filmmaker’s mind.

The director said that once Akshay heard the story of the film, he asked why he could not play the role since he wanted it very badly. Thus, his desire and readiness for a darker character helped Priyadarshan see that Akshay is suitable for Haiwaan.
Another interesting fact is that Saif Ali Khan also supported the decision of Akshay Kumar about the role. Priyadarshan said that Saif told him that Akshay gave him the “best gift” by taking the role of an antagonist against him.
Haiwaan Is Not a Comedy, Says Priyadarshan
Despite having created several popular comedy movies, Priyadarshan emphasized that Haiwaan is not a comedy movie. The filmmaker described the movie as a sleek thriller with the clash of the two strong characters.
This project also sees Priyadarshan return to the action thriller category after 16 long years. According to the director, this film will bring a new experience in terms of cinema and bring out a new dimension in his filmmaking approach.
