‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’ Movie Review (2026): Directed and written by Saurabh Shukla, ‘Jab Khuli Kitaab‘ is a Hindi-language drama film that deals with the sensitive and less talked-about issue of divorce in elderly citizens. The movie is an adaptation of the writer-director’s own stage play of the same name. The movie is now streaming on ZEE5.
The movie stars veteran actors Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapur in the lead roles. The movie, which is a family drama with many secrets and emotional conflicts, tries to delve into the complexities of a long marriage and the consequences of hidden truths. However, the movie fails to delve deeper into the issues because, even though the premise of the movie is interesting, the movie does not explore the themes well enough.

‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’ Plot
Jab Khuli Kitaab is the story of the life of the elderly couple of Anasuya (Dimple Kapadia) and Gopal (Pankaj Kapur), who have been married for more than five decades. After coming out of the comatose condition she had slipped into, Anasuya reveals a long-held secret to her husband Gopal. This revelation of the secret shocks Gopal so much that he decides to file for divorce from his wife of 55 years of marriage.
Anasuya tries her best to persuade Gopal to take back his decision of divorce. However, Gopal himself seems to be in doubt about the decision he has made. This is clear from the conversations he has with divorce lawyer Negi, played by Aparshakti Khurana in the movie. The couple hides the real reason for the sudden fight from their family members. Their sons, Param and Dholu, along with the rest of the family members, are perplexed by the sudden fight between their elderly parents, who had always been so affectionate towards each other.
At the heart of the movie, the film tries to explore the possibility of whether the marriage of many decades could survive the weight of the unspoken truth and whether divorce in old age is even an option.
Cast Performances
One of the better aspects of the movie is the performances of the actors. Dimple Kapadia performs well in the movie as she portrays the character of Anasuya, who is carrying the burden of a secret that has completely changed her life. Though the movie does not justify the actions of the character well enough, the emotional vulnerability of the actress makes the character interesting to watch.
Pankaj Kapur, who is known for his powerful performances in movies, portrays the character of Gopal well in the movie. Though the character of Gopal is written in an inconsistent manner, the performance of the actor is believable enough.
Among the other actors in the movie, Aparshakti Khurana performs well in the movie as the slightly awkward divorce lawyer Negi.

Positive Aspects
One of the better aspects of the movie is the unique theme of the movie. Though the movie could have handled the theme better, the fact that the movie tries to bring awareness about divorce in old age is appreciable.
In the movie, the emotional moments between the couple are well portrayed. These moments in the movie bring out the history of the marriage between the characters of Gopal and Anasuya.
In addition, the quality acting, especially by Dimple Kapadia, keeps the audience interested, despite the script’s lacklustre performance.
Negative Aspects
The movie, despite its intriguing plot, does not delve sufficiently into the motivations behind the actions taken by the characters. The script does not explore sufficiently why Anasuya made the decision that caused all the commotion, nor does it delve sufficiently into why Gopal is so affected by it.
The movie has a meandering quality, which makes it emotionally inconsistent. Instead of delving sufficiently into the complexities of marriage, it reduces it to something simple, where divorce is considered socially unacceptable.
The movie is a 115-minute-long film that has pacing issues, especially since some scenes seem repetitive.
Verdict
Despite the remarkable performance by the lead duo, the film failed to meet the audience’ expectations due to its pacing issues.
