Storyline
Differing from typical sports documentaries, Land of Football is devoted to the special football culture of Kerala. It reveals why this state in a nation of cricket lovers managed to develop an incredible love for international football.
The first episode of this series tells about the pioneers of Kerala’s football passion—veteran sports journalist Bhasi Malapparamba, who was present at the most important football events, like eight FIFA World Cups. Then it moves on to the life story of legendary coach Rufus D’Souza, who dedicated his whole life to football.
The documentary also highlights the excitement associated with the local tournaments of Sevens football. As the story unfolds, there emerge another set of characters that include young dreamers such as football players, reporters, and coaches who want to see India one day playing on the highest platform of the sport.
Cast and Real-life Personalities of the Documentary
As the series is a documentary, its lead actors are obviously those real personalities whose life stories make up the narration of the movie.
Recollections of Bhasi Malapparamba about his meetings with the legendary football player Pelé and participation in various World Cups bring some historical perspective to the narration. The devotion to grassroots-level football by coach Rufus D’Souza represents perfectly the dedication to the football culture of the region.
Among other real-life personalities featured in the documentary are Arsenal fan Inzamam-ul-Haq, sports reporter Jushna Shahin, talented footballer Rinsha Mariyam, Indian footballer CV Seena, and local football fans.
Positive Points
- Firstly, the biggest strength of ‘Land of Football’ lies in its emotional storytelling. Instead of profiling the lives of celebrities who are great football players, this documentary has managed to focus on the lives of people who dedicate their lives to football.
- Through Hasif Hakeem’s narration, football is presented as a cultural identity for families, communities, and generations. Through the documentary, the history of the passion for foreign teams in Kerala is presented very well in order to counter the misconception about it.
- The photography is fantastic in capturing the local football stadiums, the fan culture of Kerala, and even the landscapes of the region. The editing is fantastic too, and the emotional soundtrack further enhances the emotional storytelling of the documentary.

Negative Points
- The Land of Football is a very nostalgic documentary, which limits the scope for exploring the current professional football scene in India. Some personalities featured in the series would have benefited from more screen time as well.
- Football fans in search of analysis and strategic insight about the game might feel more moved emotionally by the film than educated.
Conclusion
Land of Football is an inspirational story of the unique football culture in Kerala. Using real-life stories, true emotions, and excellent cinematic technique, it has succeeded in explaining why football is more than a game for millions of people in Kerala.
If you are a hardcore football fan or if you just love human tales, then you will enjoy watching this documentary.
