Matka King Series Review (2026): Prime Video’s eagerly awaited web series “Matka King” comes loaded with expectations, given Vijay Varma stars as the lead and Nagraj Manjule directs the project. Based on the story of Ratan Khatri, Matka King strives to portray the evolution of a gambling empire during the 1960s in Bombay. Despite the interesting theme, the show fails to bring anything novel to a genre that has produced numerous gems such as Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story.

Synopsis

The series revolves around Brij Bhatti, a hustler born in Karachi, who introduces a new betting game called “Matka” and turns out to be a sensation across the nation.

Brij Bhatti experiences the classic pattern of being an underdog at first and then rising to a high position in the gambling community. 

The protagonist’s life is marked by conventional factors such as family issues, corruption, competition, betrayal, and ultimately downfall. Once “Matka” gains national fame, Brij establishes himself as a gambling kingpin.

Although the show tries to maintain a balance between crime and drama, the plot lacks innovation and originality.

Cast & Acting

Vijay Varma gives a sincere portrayal as Brij Bhatti, who comes across as an anti-hero due to his moral conflicts. The actor brings alive the ambitious and morally conflicted persona of a man who does things for the good of everyone else.

While all the other actors fit into their respective roles, they do not have many scenes that make them stand out due to poor scripting.

What Works

• The Matka gambling system, along with its popularity among the masses, is showcased quite nicely throughout the series.
• Occasionally, Bhatti’s ability to manipulate various scenarios adds an entertainment factor to the show.

What Could Have Been Better

• First, this web series heavily imitates Scam 1992; therefore, viewers might think that Matka King is a boring replication instead of a novel story.
• Secondly, the storyline has no emotional depth and does not delve into the mental side of its characters.
• Thirdly, there is too much glorification of Bhatti without any criticism of his deeds.
• Furthermore, technical imperfections such as artificial sets, green-screen filming techniques, and excessive dramatization decrease authenticity.

Finally, it is very predictable due to cliché use.

Conclusion

Although Matka King could be a riveting crime web series, it became just another typical product that lacks creativity and good writing. Despite impressive acting from Vijay Varma, the series is not well-written and original enough to succeed.

For those who like rags-to-riches crime stories, this film is recommended to be watched only once. However, anyone looking for something unusual would be disappointed.
