Ryan Gosling Confirmed as MCU’s New Ghost Rider: The official confirmation comes from Marvel Studios, who just announced during the highly anticipated San Diego Comic-Con 2026 Hall H panel that actor Ryan Gosling will play the iconic character Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze in their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This marks Gosling’s first-ever superhero film, as he takes over the iconic role previously portrayed by Nicolas Cage.

Ryan Gosling’s MCU Debut Officially Announced
The casting reveal turned out to be one of the most anticipated moments at this year’s Comic-Con. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took to the stage to introduce Ryan Gosling as the next Johnny Blaze, with confirmation that the Academy Award-nominated actor would head up a standalone movie about the famous antihero.
Speaking on stage before an excited crowd, Gosling said that Ghost Rider had always been someone he’d wanted to portray on screen. As fans have shown over time, they’ve felt exactly the same way about seeing the actor become part of the MCU.
Shawn Levy to Direct Ghost Rider
The upcoming Ghost Rider film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who just worked with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. He also helmed Marvel’s blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine.
In his Hall H presentation, Levy told us how talks with Gosling during the production of Star Wars: Starfighter served as inspiration for this project.
He hinted at a possible 2028 release date, though Marvel hasn’t officially announced one yet.
Nicolas Cage’s Legacy as Ghost Rider
He first portrayed the character in the 2007 movie Ghost Rider, where he reappeared in its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Though these movies were met with mixed reviews, Nicolas Cage was able to establish Johnny Blaze as a compelling and memorable Marvel supernatural antihero through his portrayal.
Johnny Blaze began life as a motorcycle stuntman who sold his soul in order to save his dying father, earning him an existence as the Spirit of Vengeance with all kinds of cool supernatural abilities, including supernatural strength, a blazing skull, fiery chains, and a fearsome gaze known as the Penance Stare! Being that the character has such a unique set of powers, it’s easy to see why this character has remained one of Marvel’s most unique heroes ever!
What Fans Can Expect
The casting of Ryan Gosling marks a big move from Marvel Studios as they look to bring more supernatural stories into the ever-growing cinematic universe. Although there isn’t much in the way of story yet (so don’t get too excited just yet), the fact that Gosling was able to work with such an amazing director on this project has brought a lot of excitement for this movie.
