Soothravakyam Plot: A Unique Premise with Untapped Potential
Soothravakyam is the story of Circle Inspector Christo Xavier (Shine Tom Chacko), who, with his colleagues, runs a tuition centre on the top floor of the police station, and that’s where the chaos starts. This unusual arrangement of tuition is one of the film’s quirks, trying to give a new direction to the film. The officers are seen as very dedicated, as they visit the homes of the students who skip classes. This is just the start, as one of these students is connected to a missing person, and that’s where the actual story starts.
However, this tuition arrangement on top of the police station was a good attempt, but it failed to create a stronger emotional connection. The screenplay of Soothravakyam is awful, as it avoids showing how these classes came about or what relationship Christo shares with his students.
Soothravakyam Review: Transition Into a Crime Thriller
The story takes a perfect turn after the police receive a missing person’s case, and the missing person is seen connected to one of the tuition attendees. The script, which is co-written by Chirammel and Rejin S. Babu, tries to shift a light-hearted drama to a procedural investigation.
An abandoned pacemaker adds the spark to the investigation; however, this subplot arrives a little late, and it feels like it’s an afterthought rather than a carefully planned twist. The twist is good, however, at times you will feel it is getting overpowered by the meandering first half and uneven editing.
Performances That Couldn’t Save the Film
Soothravakyam’s review was somewhat saved by Shine Tom Chacko, as he delivered an unforgettable performance that suggests he is trying to break free from his usual stereotypes. His portrayal of Inspector Christo Xavier always brings energy to the screen; however, the lack of depth in his character limits his impact.
Vincy Aloshious, though she had very short screen time, wasn’t able to make any mark on the screen. Deepak Parambol is also unfortunately wasted because he is shown as a one-dimensional, perpetually angry brother whose violent behavior drives parts of the narrative, but it lacks emotional weight.
Soothravakyam Final Review
Soothravakyam is a good attempt to serve the crime thriller, which is backed by the excellent action of the cast; however, the film failed in two contrasting tones. The movie was a ride of light-hearted drama and serious investigation, but unfortunately, it didn’t blend that well. However, you will feel a humorous first half, but overall, the movie lacks that satisfaction and depth.
