Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga Movie Review: The Tamil thriller “Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga“, which was directed by Dinesh Lakshmanan, finally arrived in theatres on November 21, 2025, with a lot of promise. The film was inspired by a real-life case that shocked the nation. The film’s core intention is admirable, but the narrative is very poor, as it suffers from cluttered writing, tonal inconsistencies, and a lack of finesse that ultimately dilutes the movie’s impact.

Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga Plot Summary
Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga starts with the gruesome murder of writer Jebanesan (Logu NPKS). The killer has grown to be dressed in an all-black outfit, and this instantly sets up an intriguing mystery. Why was Jeba crying while speaking to his daughter? Who wanted him dead? And why so brutally?
Inspector Magudapathy (Arjun) is a stern and methodical cop assigned to handle this case. The early portions of Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga are designed effectively to build curiosity and tease a compelling investigative drama.
But the momentum doesn’t last. The film doesn’t really focus on the murder and its hidden layers, but the narrative shifts into multiple directions, each more distracting than the last.

Unnecessary Diversions Weaken the Core Narrative
Forced Comedy Tracks
The story introduces Adhi (Praveen Raj) and his friend (played by Prankster Rahul). Adhi is a sleep therapist, and Rahul functions as an “aunty hero”. But their forced flirtations are milked for comedy, and it didn’t really hit. These scenes feel completely out of place, and they drain the tension the film had managed to build.
The Introduction of Meera
Aishwarya Rajesh plays Meera. She is a teacher at a school for autistic children. Her character initially suggests emotional depth. However, the film uses her more as a plot device than an organic part of the narrative.
The Convoluted Mystery
The story attempts to connect Jebanesan’s death to businessman Varadharajan, but it doesn’t sound logical at all due to badly constructed buildings linked to the accidental death of a young girl. The thematic ambition is commendable. However, the screenplay presents these layers in an overwhelming, disjointed manner.

Execution Issues: Where the Film Truly Falters
Tonally Confused Storytelling
Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga had a good script, but it’s the execution that prevented it from scoring high. Scenes involving voyeuristic cameras, a suspicious husband, and preachy monologues appear and disappear without purpose. The film takes us to a forced blend of message-driven drama, slapstick humor, and social commentary, too, without any proper execution.
Insensitive Depictions
The portrayal of sexual violence, which is connected to Anikha’s character, is handled with inadequate sensitivity. At times, it appears that the narrative sensationalises trauma. Additionally, the gaslighting of a single mother (Abhirami Venkatachalam) is depicted superficially, stripping the film of emotional depth.
Convenient Investigations
Magudapathy’s investigative journey lacks credibility. It lacked those much-needed mysterious angles because the evidence appears to be convenient, including a manuscript that practically solves the case. Such shortcuts could have been avoided, as they rob the film of its intended seriousness.
Performances: Earnest but Underserved
- Arjun was good, as he delivered a composed performance, but the writing limits his potential.
- Aishwarya Rajesh tries her best, but the screenplay gives her too little to work with.
- Anikha stands out despite minimal screen time. She is the highlight, as she offered the most emotionally grounded performance.
- Praveen Raj and Rahul tried to bring that fun angle, but they struggled with unfunny, unnecessary comedic segments.
Final Verdict: A Film With Purpose but No Precision
Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga is a poor execution of a potential hit movie. The film tried to highlight an important issue. However, it collapses under its own narrative confusion. With sharper writing, better tonal control, and more sensitivity, it could have been a powerful thriller. But Theeyavar Kulai Nadunga had turned out to be a half-baked film that relies heavily on intent and too little on execution.
