Ryan Coogler Confirms Black Panther 3 at SDCC 2026: During today’s much-anticipated Hall H panel at SDCC 2026, Marvel Studios have revealed that their next film from visionary filmmaker Ryan Coogler – ‘Black Panther 3‘ – will be coming to theatres on December 15, 2028.
The biggest news surrounding this reveal, however, came with the confirmation that David Jonsson will be taking over the mantle of the world-renowned superhero known as the Black Panther, which marks a monumental moment within the MCU’s history.
Ryan Coogler Returns to Direct Black Panther 3
The Black Panther movies have been helmed by Ryan Coogler, whose direction made the 2018 release a critical darling and a box office smash hit, with its sequel releasing in 2022—Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Alongside Coogler were Letitia Wright, who stars as Shuri, and Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, also appearing live onstage.
Coogler shared more details about the movie during today’s presentation at Comic-Con, revealing that it’ll be focusing on the son of T’Challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman, and how he goes through his coming-of-age journey while stepping into the legacy of being the Black Panther.
David Jonsson Becomes the New Black Panther
The British actor David Jonsson, who played in both Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, was given a standing ovation once he stepped on the stage following the announcement. Jonsson shared gratitude towards Ryan Coogler as well as Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, and the rest of the Marvel family for this incredible chance to perform before saying, “The movie will definitely speak for itself,” but without giving away any details about the story.
Jonsson added: “It’s been a tremendous honour.”
Casting adds yet another exciting chapter to the Black Panther franchise that continues the legacy set forth by Chadwick Boseman’s unforgettable take on T’Challa.
Black Panther 3 Release Date
According to Marvel Studios, Black Panther 3 will come out in cinemas on December 15, 2028. It’s going to carry forward the storyline about Wakand from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” but with the younger one in the spotlight.
Marvel’s Massive SDCC 2026 Showcase
It was just one of many big announcements made by Marvel Studios as part of its Hall H presentation today. In addition to unveiling details on the upcoming Black Panther movie, Marvel dropped a new Ghost Rider film staring Ryan Gosling, showed off some new footage from Avengers: Doomsday and celebrated the return of Avengers: Endgame to theatres with more footage before its re-release.
While we’ll have to wait until 2028 to see if our hopes come true, Marvel has definitely set itself up well for an exciting new era of movies in Wakanda thanks to the fact that Ryan Coogler’s back at the helm and David Jonsson is about to step into the shoes of the Black Panther.
