Why Dingko Singh’s Story Deserves to Be Told on the Big Screen
Raja Krishna Menon talked exclusively to Variety India about bringing Dingko Singh’s story to moviegoers. He revealed that the sports biopic was one of the most prominent projects he worked on, and, in fact, he first offered the role to Shahid Kapoor.
According to Menon, Singh was an unbelievable personality, and his story should be told because it reflects the unique transformation of the sport, politics, and the world. It also has everything a biopic needs – it reflects the story of one of the most influential people from Manipur, who managed to become a national hero and increase the popularity of boxing in the region.
Dingko Singh’s Place in History
In 1998, Dingko Singh made history by winning the gold medal in the 54 kg weight at the Asian Games in Bangkok. This victory made him a national hero. In 2000, he participated in the Olympic Games in Sydney and continued to play a leading role in Indian boxing.
It is worth mentioning that Singh was posthumously awarded the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri, India’s civilian honor. The sportsman died at the age of 42, on
10 June 2021.

Shahid Kapoor’s Possible Return
Shahid Kapoor was Menon’s first choice to play Singh; however, the director admitted that Kapoor was perhaps too old for the role, and a young actor should have taken over the role. According to Raja Krishna Menon, Singh was at his best in his late 20s, and it would be better if the young hero matched the age.
The director stated that, “I don’t know if Shahid would be interested anymore in doing it because, one, Dingko was very young… in his 20s… when much of his life’s story took place.. It’s definitely a film that needs to be made. And it needs to be made with someone younger.”
Menon also said that making a film about the Indian boxing legend would be extremely difficult for him. However, everything is possible, and he will return to this project if the opportunity arises. Younger actors have a chance to revive the biopic and tell the world about this inspiring sportsman.
