Irumudi Movie Review: Ravi Teja stars in this Shiva Nirvana-directed Telugu film, “Irumudi“, which blends a touching father-daughter drama with a crime thriller. It has elements of alcoholism, redemption, family and a father protecting his daughter at all costs. Ravi Teja delivers one of his best performances in recent times, but alas, the script fails the man who is trying to deliver a comeback through this film.

Irumudi Storyline
Ravi Teja plays the role of an auto driver and a small-time businessman in a remote village. Deeply devoted to his young daughter Manikanta, he is also a heavy drinker facing lots of domestic problems. His wife Kaveri (Priya Bhavani Shankar) finds him uncontrollable as he goes on a drinking spree while his daughter asks him to give up drinking.
Trinadh begins a 41-day Ayyappa Deeksha to appease his daughter and take her along for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
The second half sees the narrative shift to a crime thriller with the abduction of girls and Trinadh finding himself in the middle of the conflict as he protects his daughter and others in the village from a predator. Meanwhile, the devotion to Lord Ayyappa continues as Trinadh reaches the temple.

Star Performances Review
Ravi Teja is the star attraction in this film as he sheds the mass hero image and delivers a low-key, restrained performance as a broken alcoholic trying to redeem himself through the Ayyappa Deeksha. He portrays the angst, guilt, love, and fear in equal measure with his facial expressions, which is simply praiseworthy.
Baby Nakshatra is adorable as Manikanta, with her performance running deeper than just a child alongside Ravi Teja. Priya Bhavani Shankar delivers the expected performance as the troubled wife, while Sai Kumar, Swasika and Ajay Ghosh do their part well in limited roles.
Positive points
The first half is a treat with the deep bond between Trinadh and Manikanta developed slowly by Shiva Nirvana. The depiction of the father-daughter bonding is endearing without trying to push the narrative to the central conflict as quickly.
The second half also sees the devotion to Lord Ayyappa shown in true spirit with the music and background score by GV Prakash Kumar making these episodes even more attractive. Songs like Irumudi Kattu and Mallepoola Pallaki deserve special mentions.

Negative points
There is an inconsistency in the tone as Shiva Nirvana shifts from a realistic family drama to a crime thriller with the abduction of girls. The action sequences leading to the climax are too formulaic, and the villains are cartoonish in their nature as compared to the realistic approach elsewhere in the film.
The second half needed more development, with the script and pacing also lagging behind. In other words, the film is a mix of two different genres that fail to gel with each other.
Overall Verdict
To sum up, “Irumudi” has some great strengths, with its emotional quotient and the performance by Ravi Teja being the highlight of the film. The lovely baby Nakshatra is also good in her role, while GV Prakash Kumar’s music score is another positive point. On the contrary, the second half was inconsistent with the first, with the villainous roles being over the top and the script lacking there as well. Irumudi was a potential comeback film for Ravi Teja that got away due to the inconsistent second half.
