Ashakal Aayiram Movie Review (2026): The Malayalam family comedy drama “Ashakal Aayiram” has been released, and it marked the much-anticipated reunion of Jayaram and his son Kalidas Jayaram on screen after more than two decades. The movie is directed by G. Prajith. It presents the perfect blend of family emotions, aspirations, and generational conflict but has a familiar narrative. The Ashakal Aayiram story is not very unique or jaw-dropping, but it is the performances and emotional depth that come together to elevate the viewing experience.

Ashakal Aayiram revolves around Ajeesh (played by Kalidas Jayaram), a young man who is very determined to be a big film star. His father, Hariharan (portrayed by Jayaram), is a hard-working medical representative who is trying to keep the family financially stable. Their relationship is the perfect reflection of the tension of adulthood, and it is filled with affection, misunderstandings, and unspoken expectations.

A sudden turn of events changes their lives dramatically, and this pushes Hariharan into unexpected fame and alters the family dynamic. The narrative is all about the exploration of ambition, responsibility, and emotional distance that shape the bond between a father and his grown-up son.

Direction and Storytelling

G. Prajith, who is popularly known for Oru Vadakkan Selfie, has done an amazing job to present a story that feels grounded and relatable. The film taps into nostalgia as it brings back the iconic father-son pairing and shifts the tone toward a more mature and layered relationship. The film doesn’t really focus on childhood innocence, but the story tries to capture the complexities of adulthood and family responsibilities.

Cast Performances

Jayaram is the highlight of the film, as he emerges as the emotional anchor of the film. His portrayal of Hariharan is natural and understated, as it balances humour and emotional vulnerability with ease. He was very effortless as he carried several key moments with authenticity and made the character relatable.

Kalidas Jayaram complements him well as Ajeesh. His performance was flawless, and it reflected the ambition and internal conflict of a young man who is chasing dreams while dealing with familial expectations.

Asha Sharath adds the much-needed emotional strength as the mother who is quietly holding the family together.

What Could Be Better

  • Despite its strengths, the film follows a somewhat predictable storyline.
  • The plot progression is very poor, and it feels familiar at times.
  • There are emotional beats that could have been explored more deeply.
  • The second half of Ashakal Aayiram slightly loses momentum, especially when compared to the opening portions.

Worth a watch

All in all, Ashakal Aayiram takes us to a sincere family drama that is driven by strong performances and relatable emotions. The narrative of the film doesn't really break new ground, but the combination of Jayaram and Kalidas Jayaram works very well to bring authenticity and depth to their roles.
