Baramulla Story
Baramulla takes us to Kashmir, and it gives us a poignant reflection on identity and belonging. He has returned to his childhood home in Baramulla after decades of exile. His journey started as an attempt to reconnect with his past, but it turned into a psychological descent into haunting memories and unresolved trauma.
Here, the horror is not in the supernatural but in the emotional. The character’s encounters with abandoned homes and familiar faces that have faded into time will make your eyes melt, and it will be difficult for you to hold your tears.
Manav Kaul’s Stellar Performance
Manav Kaul has shown his class, as he once again proved why he’s one of India’s most underrated actors. In Baramulla, he delivered a career-defining performance. He presents the right balance of quiet introspection and intense emotional outbursts. His portrayal is very natural, as it captures the duality of grief that is the tenderness of memory and the torment of nostalgia.
Kaul doesn’t act on his pain; he lives it. His silences speak something, and it is more effective than any dialogue. This restrained and very impactful performance sets the entire narrative, and it also elevates Baramulla beyond its slow-burning pacing.
Direction and Cinematography: Beauty Meets Desolation
Director Vineeta Kumar was very good, as she crafted Baramulla like a painting drenched in melancholy. Every frame feels intentional. Scenes involving misty landscapes of Kashmir and dimly lit interiors mirror the protagonist’s emotional state. The cinematography is breathtaking, and it is very suffocating. One can feel the beauty of the valley, which contrasts painfully with the protagonist’s inner emptiness.
The sound design also plays a vital role. There are no loud scares or orchestral spikes. But there are subtle ambient sounds which give us the crunch of snow, distant calls, and echoing footsteps. It will definitely pull the audience deeper into the character’s isolation.

Themes of Identity, Memory, and Belonging
