Will Byers’ Powers and His Battle Against Vecna
The final moments of episode 4 are very shocking, as it shows us Will stepping into a role that no one expected. Will was connected to Vecna psychologically for years, but now he finally turned that connection into power. Vecna paralyzes Will and mocks him for being “easy to break.” But for the first time, Will fights back.
Will gains enough emotional strength to control the Demogorgons, all thanks to Robin’s guidance and a montage of his joyful childhood memories. His nosebleed is the highlight, as it mirrors Eleven’s signature sign of power. It confirmed that he now shares abilities similar to hers. This twist in Stranger Things season 5, volume 1, ending explains the biggest reveal: Will might be the key weapon to finally defeat Vecna.

Kali (Eight) Returns – And She’s a Prisoner
Volume 1 also reveals that Dr Kay is the new antagonist who is tied to secret Upside Down experiments. Dr Kay is seen holding Kali, which is also known as Eight. Kali’s illusion-based psychic powers are very crucial, and they later made her a valuable target. Dr Kay falsely believes Eleven is responsible for abducting Hawkins children, and Kay hopes that Kali can lead her closer to the truth.
In the final scene, we saw Eleven and Hopper have found Kali trapped inside an Upside Down military facility, and this sets up a potential rescue mission in volume 2. This reunion was necessary, as it hints that Kali’s abilities might combine with Eleven’s and Will’s to fight against Vecna’s evolving strength.
Max Mayfield’s Shocking Condition
Max is alive, but she exists in two places at once: her physical body remains in a coma at Hawkins General, and her consciousness is trapped inside Vecna’s memories. She witnesses Henry Creel’s past. She gets through the high-school events shown in The First Shadow and even the moment he cursed her.
It was seen that when Lucas plays her favorite music, Max briefly finds a gateway back to reality. This echoes her iconic season 4 escape, but the connection cuts too soon. Max finds a cave deep inside Vecna’s memories. It is that place that he fears and builds a safe zone there. Holly’s arrival gives her renewed hope to escape in volume 2.
Why Vecna Is Targeting Hawkins Children
Vecna’s plan becomes clear: children are “the perfect vessels” because their minds are easier to control. Holly Wheeler is his first target, followed by other missing kids like Derek Turnbow. The military are working very hard as they discover the disappearance pattern and trap the children at MAC-Z. However, Joyce and the team did well to create an underground escape route that is inspired by The Great Escape.
It feels like Vecna’s biggest mistake will be underestimating Will and the courage of Hawkins’s youngest heroes.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the Stranger Things season 5 volume 1 ending is amazing, as it sets the perfect stage for volume 2 and finals. It will be interesting to see what Stranger Things season 5 volume 2 has, which is to be released on December 25, 2025.
