‘The Hawk’ Series Review: Returning to sports comedy, the niche where Will Ferrell had already produced several successful projects, is Netflix’s new series, ‘The Hawk.’ Comprising ten episodes of roughly 30 minutes’ duration, the series tells the story of a retired famous golfer who makes an attempt at a comeback amidst personal troubles and family disputes. Despite its promising concept and great cast, however, The Hawk fails to meet the audience’s expectations and is hardly funny at all with a somewhat stereotypical plot.

Plot Overview
The plot of the series concerns Lonnie “Hawk” Hawkins (Will Ferrell), an ex-golfer who tries to get back to his hey days. Yet his main opponent is not the age factor but the person who shares his surname—his son, Lance Hawkins (Jimmy Tatro), a young PGA Tour pro whose success Lonnie cannot tolerate.
Frustrated with others’ referring to his son as “The Hawk,” Lonnie takes it personally and treats Lance as a rival endangering his status. As the rivalry of the two intensifies, some old family secrets start surfacing.
Depth of the characters includes the bond between Lance and Old Henry (Keith David), the caddie and Lonnie’s long-time friend, who was involved more in raising Lance than Lonnie’s father was. After Henry passes away, Lonnie joins forces with another caddie, Sam (Fortune Feimster), who has a sub-story involving crime that seems to be unconnected with the main plotline.

Cast Performances: Who Stands Out in the Series?
- Will Ferrell demonstrates excellent acting in the role of Lonnie Hawkins, bringing a character of an old, proud and jealous athlete to perfection. Will retains all his talents, but he does not have many chances to demonstrate them due to the screenplay.
- Jimmy Tatro presents a well-acted part of Lance, combining his arrogance and vulnerability. Lance’s complicated attitude towards his father forms the basis of the plot of the whole series.
- Fortune Feimster successfully demonstrates her acting talents in the part of Sam and shows great chemistry with Will Ferrel. However, screenwriting leaves this brilliant duo underused.
- Keith David makes his mark in spite of having less screen time, bringing some humanity to the narrative.
Positive Aspects
Father and son rivalry is quite an interesting element that sets the plot in motion. There are several exciting scenes as far as the conflict between legacy, ego, and family is concerned.
The shortness of each episode is another advantage of this show, which means that it is possible to binge-watch it. The actors of Will Ferrell, Jimmy Tatro, and Fortune Feimster are always fun to watch regardless of the content they receive.
Negative Aspects
The main problem of ‘The Hawk’ is that it lacks a screenplay. It turns out to be quite predictable since there are no surprises whatsoever throughout the series. Character development is superficial, and Lonnie’s selfish behavior turns out to be annoying.
A comedy show that should be hilarious does not provide many memorable jokes. The crime storyline with Sam becomes an unnecessary distraction from the main story. Even the golf scenes sometimes fail to consider realism in the show.
Final Word
‘The Hawk’ has all the necessary factors to make it a great sports comedy – a good cast, a conflict between a father and his son, and the starring role of Will Ferrell. However, poor writing, plot predictability, and lack of humor make it fall short.
