Plot Breakdown
‘Elize: Shadows of a Woman’ tells a story of Elize Matsunaga (Lorena Comparato), a woman married to wealthy businessman Marcos Matsunaga (Henrique Kimura) in what seemed to be a fairytale marriage. Nevertheless, there is more in this union than meets the eye, with the perfect life being based on manipulation, loneliness, and mistrust.
The film narrates the events of this case using non-linear narrative techniques, jumping between post-crime stories and some moments in the lives of the spouses. In contrast to the crime story that might have been created, the film shows how a combination of factors pushed Elize to such a decision.
Significantly, the script does not present either of the characters as utterly blameless or entirely at fault for their actions. Marcos is a charismatic figure but a very manipulative one, whereas Elize, despite her sympathy, is highly imperfect. It makes the movie much more morally complex than a usual adaptation of a crime story.

Performances
An outstanding portrayal is performed by Lorena Comparato, who plays Elize and brings most of the movie life to it by means of facial expressions and emotions instead of dialogues. Elize is a very believable portrayal of a lonely woman who was betrayed and suffers from unhealed wounds.
Henrique Kimura also proves himself as an excellent actor, and it is very easy to see why Elize fell in love with him. Nevertheless, as the story unfolds, one can see how manipulative the character really is, and the silent emotional conflicts that develop between him and Elize become the strongest parts of the movie.
Supporting actors are also successful in the movie.

Positive Points
The director, Felipe Vellasco, achieves a terrifying atmosphere through the psychological thriller rather than explicit violence. Being aware of how real-life events inspired the plot makes each dialogue and interaction even more disturbing.
Cinematography helps to show both the opulence of the couple’s lifestyle and their emotional detachment. Another strong point of the movie is that it does not rely on sensationalism but tries to describe the psychological degradation which precedes the crime.
Negative Points
Still, there is one serious flaw in the movie. The whole relationship of the couple takes several years, while the film lasts only 93 minutes, and it becomes impossible to show dramatic moments properly because all life-changing events happen very quickly.
Final Verdict
The Elize: Shadows of a Woman focuses on the emotional disintegration of a woman before the crime rather than solving the mystery itself. Though the movie has some difficulties with mixing psychological thriller, biography, and true crime genres, it is worth watching because of its atmosphere and performances of the actors.
