Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Movie Review (2026): The latest Malayalam film, “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit,” is a charming romantic comedy directed by Girish AD, who demonstrates yet another skillful performance in an array of genres. The film features Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju as the leads, telling the story of an age-gap romance without glorifying the toxicity often associated with the trope. Instead, the film focuses on emotional maturity, interpersonal relationships, humor, and most importantly, genuine affection.
“Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” stands out from similar pictures due to the sincerity of its central relationship. Girish AD, the film’s director/writer, and co-writer Kiran Josey avoid the toxic idealization of romance and manage to depict love as an intimate relationship between two people full of understanding, humor, and compassion. This approach makes the film one of those heartwarming Malayalam movies that appeal to general audiences rather than try to impress critics.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Plot
“Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” tells the story of Justin (Nivin Pauly), a local catering business owner and a reliable member of his community in Karukutty. Known for always being available to help with odd jobs, he is regarded as the most trustworthy person in town. However, this perception begins to change when the new family, led by Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), moves to the neighborhood.
Having left Mundakayam, Ashley feels right at home being surrounded by familiar Kerala landscapes. Still, it is hard to adapt to the local pace of life, and the most prominent change is getting accustomed to living with relative Justin. He immediately attempts to welcome the family with open arms, which wins him the trust and friendship of Ashley’s children. As for Ashley herself, she gradually warms up to Justin, and their relationship becomes romantic.
It is unclear how their feelings for each other developed exactly due to circumstances, but the love between the characters is genuine and free from toxicity. However, the couple decides to hide their relationship from families due to potential age gap-related drama. Nevertheless, the cat eventually discovers the mouse, and their families force the lovers to face the issue head-on.
Strengths

- The biggest strength of “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” is its relatability. Unlike many other romantic comedies, Girish AD manages to find humor in the mundane aspects of the characters’ routine rather than create a silly and artificial context for love to develop.
- The film’s dialogue is realistic, and both comedy and drama come out naturally from the interactions between characters. In addition, the director manages to include relevant references to pop culture without making it the central point of the film.
- Another major asset of the film is its ability to depict a realistic romance. Even though it portrays an age gap relationship, it avoids the ubiquitous toxicity associated with this context. Although some viewers might find the choice of the protagonist questionable, this approach makes the film much more enjoyable.
- The love story in Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is portrayed as a beautiful relationship between two people who genuinely care for each other rather than the all-encompassing madness that often makes the romance genre so exhausting.
- The film is also worth watching for stellar performances by Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. The latter, perhaps, has delivered her best performance to date, showcasing incredible talent and maturity. Baiju’s Ashley is a strong and independent woman without being one-dimensional. She is emotionally intelligent and genuinely compassionate, and her chemistry with Pauly is simply adorable.
- Pauly, in turn, demonstrates yet another flawless performance, delivering a portrayal of a charming but unassuming man that is easy to relate to. Together with Sangeeth Prathap, Vinay Forrt, and other great actors, Pauly and Baiju bring the warm atmosphere of a close-knit community to life. The setting itself is charming, and the film’s recreation of rural life feels authentic and immersive.

Weaknesses
The main problem with “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” is that some of its central ideas are a bit too cliched. The film’s third act resolves too conveniently, making the entire relationship between Ashley and Justin seem superficial. Moreover, the dialogue during the finale seems unauthentic as well, which is disappointing considering the general quality of the rest of the script.
Overall, these weaknesses are not significant enough to dismiss the film, but they somewhat affect the overall viewing experience.
Final Verdict
Overall, Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju starrer Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is a must-watch romantic comedy that focuses on an age-gap romance without glorifying the toxicity.
