Brave New Love Synopsis: Marriage or Infidelity?
‘Brave New Love’ follows Kate, a Copenhagen housewife and mother of two, played by Kathrine Thorborg Johansen. Married to supportive Orla, portrayed by Simon Sears, she has been having an affair with Andreas, an archaeologist, for three years. As Kate spends more time with Andreas, she begins to realize what she wants from her life.
While Orla is attentive to Kate’s needs, Andreas appears to have a greater emotional connection to her. However, Brave New Love does not depict one-dimensional characters that would present a clear “right” and “wrong” in the situation. The film allows the viewers to decide for themselves what would have been the right thing to do.
‘Brave New Love’ Movie Review: Unorthodox, but Not Offputting
The film’s primary strength lies in its ability to depict the situation realistically without judging the characters’ actions. Back’s bold but emotionally intelligent approach to the subject matter makes this an atypical Scandinavian arthouse production. It combines elements of emotional drama and dry humor while exploring modern relationships.
While ‘Brave New Love’ is similar to some recent European films about marriage and infidelity, it has unique contrasts and approaches the situation from a distinctly feminine perspective. When Andreas tells Kate that he is going to Greece on business, her carefully balanced world begins to unravel.
Brave New Love Cast: A Stellar Production
Thorborg Johansen plays the conflicted Kate with a mix of vulnerability and strength, and her performance is genuinely remarkable. She demonstrates an incredible range in portraying a woman who is torn between two very different men without making her more “desirable” than the leading men. Simon Sears is just as good, if not better, as her husband Orla, who is more emotionally available to her.
Anders Danielsen Lie is equally compelling as the archaeologist who seems to have a more profound emotional connection to Kate. However, he also has a life outside their relationship, which becomes apparent to him and the viewers at different times.
