GDN Movie Review: The biographical drama film “GDN,” directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar and starring R. Madhavan in the titular role. The movie focuses on the life and career of G.D. Naidu—an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a revered Tamil Nadu icon. Naidu’s real-life story is certainly interesting, but the film fails to present it in a manner that would allow viewers to truly connect to the man and his achievements.

GDN Plot
GDN revolves around the dramatic and inspiring story of G.D. Naidu and his extraordinary life. The film touches on the turbulence of Naidu’s early life, his problematic relationship with the British government, and the political and industrial conflicts that occurred between him and prominent individuals. It also showcases his nationalist temperament, which is surprisingly the only reason why his interactions with the government are explored.
However, despite the intriguing nature of the story, it is not developed to its full potential. GDN’s first issue is that it wastes its potential on the biopic by not focusing on Naidu’s inventions and engineering genius.
Instead, it portrays his complicated relationship with various politicians, industrialists, and activists, only to leave his role in promoting social reforms and the Tamil Nadu community nearly untouched. The film manages to stay interesting throughout the runtime thanks to the protagonist’s fascinating life and personality, which is the main asset of GDN.
Cast Performances
- As mentioned above, the film’s strength is R. Madhavan’s portrayal of G.D. Naidu. He is believable in his role and manages to adapt his behavior, mannerisms, and appearance depending on the scene’s context. While his performance is quite restrained due to the writing, he rarely fails to convince the viewer that he is watching Naidu.
- Other notable performances include Sathyaraj’s portrayal of an irresponsible yet lovable character. He is arguably the film’s second most talented actor, and his screen presence and natural dialogues are some of the production’s strongest points. Jayaram also deserves praise for his role as Ambalapara Krishnan.
- Vinay Rai and Carl Andrew Harte deliver somewhat one-dimensional performances as the villainous figures in GDN.
Positive Points
GDN’s main asset, as previously mentioned, is undoubtedly the story. It revolves around an interesting character and presents multiple diverse encounters, ranging from political and industrial to interpersonal. The protagonist has met numerous notable figures and continues to be involved with them throughout the plot.
Furthermore, some of the peripheral characters are portrayed in sufficient detail to understand their motives and behaviors. In addition, GDN boasts some great performances from its lead actors, Madhavan and Sathyaraj. While they do not have much screen time together, their on-screen chemistry is enjoyable to watch.
Most importantly, GDN manages to raise the general awareness of the subject since it portrays the life and legacy of an inspiring historical figure. The film’s overall appeal is high primarily because of the protagonist’s intriguing personality and impressive achievements.
Despite the film’s numerous drawbacks, it manages to keep viewers interested throughout the runtime due to the sheer variety of subjects covered and the presence of multiple notable figures portrayed in the film.

Negative Points
GDN’s main issue is its artifice, which detracts significantly from the viewing experience. Several locations, elements of interior design, costumes, and vehicles are too reminiscent of the modern day, making the film less immersive and authentic.
The film’s lack of depth is another significant drawback, as multiple aspects of the story are portrayed too superficially. The film presents most of its characters as caricatures, and several peripheral figures are underdeveloped, such as Adams and Bhupendra. Portraying Periyar in a similarly shallow manner is confusing given his close relationship with Naidu and his impact on Tamil Nadu society.
