Rebuilding Review: Written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman, “Rebuilding” (2025) is making headlines again. The film is a perfect reflection of an indie drama that presents the blend of the rugged aesthetics of a Neo-Western with deeply human storytelling. The film is anchored by a powerful performance from Josh O’Connor, and it takes viewers to the concept of exploring loss, resilience, and the fragile threads of family in the aftermath of environmental devastation.

Rebuilding Rating and Movie Details Overview

Baapofmovies.com Rating: 4/5

Rating: 4 out of 5.

  • Stars: Josh O’Connor, Lily LaTorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis and Amy Madigan

Plot and Themes

The story follows Dusty (played by Josh O’Connor), who is a ranch cowboy, and his life is upended when wildfires destroy his home. Dusty is forced into a FEMA camp as he tries to navigate through the emotional wreckage of his past as he is attempting to reconnect with his estranged ex-wife and young daughter.

This film is different from the typical films, as it takes the route of a quieter, more contemplative tone. It leans heavily on silence, subtle performances, and the natural landscape as it tries to communicate its emotional depth. The influence of films like Nomadland is evident throughout the film, and the narrative feels almost documentary-like.

Josh O’Connor’s Standout Performance

The heart of the film is Josh O’Connor’s portrayal of Dusty. Versatility and restraint go hand in hand when describing O’Connor. In the role of someone who is struggling internally trying to find his place and purpose, he manages to be touching without uttering much dialogue. For this reason, the movie’s success depends on O’Connor since he acts like glue.

Performances worth mentioning also include Lily LaTorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis, and Amy Madigan. Lily LaTorre impresses with her acting skills and is able to hold her ground in the presence of experienced actors.

Technical Aspects

Max Walker-Silverman’s direction is elegant and confident. The story that unfolds in the movie relies not on action but mostly on atmosphere. The film is beautifully filmed by cinematographer Alfonso Herrera Salcedo.

The soundtrack composed by Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington adds to the melancholic nature of the film. The inclusion of the song “How Lucky” by Kurt Vile and John Prine only helps to add to the effect.

Strengths and Minor Drawbacks

Though Rebuilding covers themes already examined in other indie films, what sets this movie apart is its heart and sincerity. The director does not try to come up with new ideas but rather tries to tell a story with honesty. Nevertheless, those looking for an action-packed movie will most likely not enjoy watching Rebuilding.
