Plot Summary
The story revolves around Tova Sullivan, an elderly widow who is employed in an aquarium located in a coastal town in Washington. Tova spends most of her time taking care of marine animals, mostly an octopus called Marcellus, despite her ability to seem calm and independent. Deep inside, however, she still struggles with the pain caused by the loss of her son years ago.
On the other hand, there comes a new person to town – Cameron. The youngster is looking for answers about his long-lost father while being lost and emotionally broken as a result of his mother’s passing.
Cast Performances
One of the standout elements of this movie is Sally Field’s incredible performance as Tova Sullivan. She manages to portray strength, humor, vulnerability, and restraint. Tova is not presented as helpless or weak; rather, it is evident that she carries some emotional burden for many years. However, she remains an independent and dignified person at all times.
Moreover, Lewis Pullman does an outstanding job as Cameron. In this role, he manages to convey feelings of confusion, loneliness, and need for acceptance. Thus, this character becomes incredibly vivid, and the audience starts to empathize with him.
Finally, Alfred Molina deserves credit for his voice performance as Marcellus. This is yet another element that could look ridiculous in any other movie, yet here it proves to be both charming and emotionally intelligent.
What Works in Remarkably Bright Creatures
In this movie, one of the strongest elements is the level of maturity of emotions depicted here. It is clear that the filmmakers decided not to exaggerate anything in order to provoke viewers into experiencing certain emotions. Instead, they chose to present a sincere and honest approach to handling grief.
It is impressive how perfectly the seaside atmosphere is portrayed, which results in creating an atmosphere of peace and coziness throughout the movie. It is nice that all the characters’ relations with nature are described with such attention, and aquarium scenes and quiet conversations contribute to it significantly.
The movie is worth praising for its well-balanced combination of funny moments with sad ones that make watching enjoyable despite the subject of the narrative.

What Doesn’t Work
First of all, there can be some predictability that can bother those viewers who regularly watch emotional family movies, since sometimes it seems that everything happens in a way similar to other dramas.
Besides, the pace of the movie is quite slow, since there are no significant events in the plot, and the focus is put on the feelings of the characters and their conversations.
Final Verdict
In conclusion, it should be admitted that Remarkably Bright Creatures is a marvelous example of a heartwarming family drama. In addition to the great plot, the film features amazing characters, played excellently by Sally Field and Lewis Pullman.
