‘The Lost Boys’ Broadway Review: This musical version of ‘The Lost Boys’ brings out an ambitious and visual-filled play, emerging as one of the most popular pieces this year. Directed by Michael Arden, this new version of the classic film from the ’80s mixes storytelling and high concept, making for a compelling first act but faltering later.

A Captivating and Immersive First Act
The start made it clear that the show is something special that includes its grandeur and unique ideas. With Dane Laffrey at the helm as the scenic designer, he creates a multi-level set design that changes constantly, turning the set from one location to another, creating an atmosphere that looks like something out of the movies.
The story is about the two brothers who move into the spooky town of Santa Carla. LJ Benet has done an excellent job while displaying Michael’s vulnerable character and need for acceptance shining through clearly in his portrayal. His change into the vampire has been completely rewritten into an intelligent character arc.

Stronger Characters and Modern Depth
Whereas the original film was lacking depth when it came to character development, the musical is able to remedy that issue. The protagonist David, that is played by Ali Louis Bourzgui, is much more menacing, and it develops a compelling dynamic with Michael. The character Star, which is played by Maria Wirries, is finally allowed to have her own story arc.
The music, written by The Rescues, reflects this atmosphere, incorporating a combination of nostalgic rock elements as well as more emotional ballads that make for a memorable score.
Second Act Lacks Coherency due to Tonal Inconsistency
The musical begins very promisingly but loses some of its power in the second act. As the plot progresses, Sam, played by Benjamin Pajak, is introduced with an obvious nod to comic books. It may seem like an interesting approach, but in reality, it takes the dark tone of the story away.

Final Verdict
The Lost Boys is a highly visual and emotional Broadway show that excels in the first act. Its creative staging and stellar acting are reasons enough to see the show, and the inconsistent tone in the second act prevents it from being a truly great production.
