Unmadham Movie Review: ‘Unmadham‘ is an Indian psychological thriller movie in Malayalam, directed by Kiran Das and written by Shahi Kabir. The plot incorporates elements of police investigation, supernatural myths, and psychological suspense, resulting in a promising combination right at the beginning. Although the film promises a promising new story, complete with a surprising twist, it ultimately falls short of its full potential, becoming just another revenge drama.
However, despite the lack of creativity in the plot, Unmadham still stands out thanks to excellent acting and impressive technical skills.

Plot: An Old Case and the Cursed Files
Shelly (Kunchacko Boban) is a Kerala Police officer dreaming of becoming a screenwriter. Having faced continuous failure when trying to make his films and mockery from other police officers, Shelly gets transferred to another police station as punishment for his failures.
However, the new police station has an old case file that is considered to be cursed. Legend has it that whoever touches this file has to face terrible consequences. Shelly, being interested in mysteries and having love for storytelling, decides to solve this mystery.
Screenplay Offers an Exciting Start
The strength of Unmadham is its premise itself. The suspense created due to the cursed file and the interval sequences are enough to keep us on our toes.
But what starts out as an engaging plot loses steam in the second half as the film follows very familiar plots and twists, which one would predict easily beforehand due to their predictability.
While the premise seems new, the execution chooses safety over creativity.

Strong Performances by the Cast
Kunchacko Boban puts up an extremely convincing performance as Shelly, capturing his emotional turmoil, insecurities, anger, and determination, and at the same time giving him depth psychologically.
Lijomol Jose is no less than Shelly’s wife and infuses realism into each of her performances. She has been very realistic and believable in her performances.
There are supporting actors like Kiran Peethambaran, Sabumon Abdusamad, Raina Radhakrishnan, and Shyna Radhakrishnan who have played their parts effectively, though some roles required better screenwriting.
Technical Aspects Maintain Interest In The Movie
Director Kiran Das maintains an engrossing ambiance through grounded visuals and real production design. The rustic set of the police station gives an additional boost to the emotional tone of the movie.
The cinematography has done justice in giving an eerie feel to the film without involving too many horror elements. On the other hand, Mujeeb Majeed’s background score plays an instrumental role in increasing the suspense element in several scenes.
These are the technical aspects that make the movie entertaining despite being predictable in its screenplay.

Conclusion
Unmadham starts with an interesting theme and presents an excellent interval track, which makes people expect more. Good performances, beautiful cinematography, and enthralling background score make it an entertaining thriller.
However, the screenplay takes an unfortunate turn and ends up in a predictable way despite having a unique theme.
