Batwara 1947 Movie Review (2026): Sunny Deol Stands Tall in a Dated Partition Drama

Batwara 1947 Movie Review: Rajkumar Santoshi’s “Batwara 1947” is an adaptation of the classic play “Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya Vo Jamya Ei Nai” by Asghar Wajahat. This drama about the partition is studded with the legendary Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol. It also marks the reunion between Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, following their excellent partnership in the 1990s. Despite the strong cast and an incredible theme, this film seems outdated and overly melodramatic.

Batwara 1947’s plot, set against the backdrop of the partition riots, revolves around Sikandar (Sunny Deol) and his family, who lose their ancestral home and decide to settle in Lahore. They soon realize that the house is occupied by a poor Hindu woman, Durgawati or Mai (Shabana Azmi), who refuses to leave as she believes her family will return one day. As the family moves in, communal violence erupts outside the house, and Abhimanyu Singh (as the local antagonist) starts spreading communal hatred in the region.

While the film does not delve deeply into historical events, it certainly portrays the tragic events occurring during the partition. It shows how ordinary people become victims of riots and highlights that there is no difference between people of different religions, so communal harmony can only be achieved through humanity and tolerance.

Stars Performances Review

• First of all, the great Sunny Deol is on top form as always, radiating power and presence on the screen, although the role seems to lack the depth of his typical character played alongside Rajkumar Santoshi.
• Shabana Azmi gives yet another brilliant performance full of vulnerability, strength, and theatricality, being the most remarkable part of the film.
• Preity Zinta delivers a solid performance as a housemaid, while Ali Fazal appears as a poet, adding some light-hearted moments to the story.
• Abhimanyu Singh and Karan Deol manage to support the central story nicely.
