Makutam Storyline

Makutam revolves around Kripakar (Vishal), a medical rep with a small family. Following his lies about having a car during the engagement ceremony, Kripakar goes into debt to buy a second-hand BMW. However, a vacation to Ooty turns horrific for him as a gang of goons opens fire on his family, killing his wife and daughter while leaving him with a critical injury to his son. This tragedy brings Kripakar face-to-face with Linga (also essayed by Vishal), the don who controls the port of Visakhapatnam.

Linga is believed to be responsible for the attack, but the underlying reason that binds the father-son duo remains mysterious. Additionally, the film leaves several questions unanswered, including the whereabouts of Linga’s wife Annapurna (Anjali) and the precise identity of the attackers. It is a generic narrative that leverages suspense and action as its primary tools.

Cast Performances

Vishal has pulled off his double role as Linga and Kripakar reasonably well. While his youthful avatar looks fetching, the aged version does not appear convincing on screen. Dushara Vijayan and Anjali turn in adequate performances, but their characters are not given substantial depth. Similarly, John Vijay, Jayaprakash, and Martin are wasted in minor roles, as they appear unbefitting their exaggerated performances.

Positive Points

The interval block is engaging and whets the appetite for the second half. The action sequences, especially the fight scene that involves the female lead, are noteworthy and provide some much-needed respite from the otherwise routine first-half drama.

The subplot about the don’s interest in stopping the import of Chinese spares that employ counterfeit Indian logos from China is a redeeming aspect. It underscores the potential threat to the country’s economy that is usually posed by complacency and makes the protagonist think beyond his vendetta.

Negative Points

The primary issue with Makutam is that there is nothing fresh about its narrative. The script looks very generic, starting with the murder of the protagonist’s family, and then it employs a flashback to showcase his efforts to exact revenge. The second-half action sequences appear repetitive, and it lacks the much-needed oomph to sustain viewer interest.

Makutam fails to balance Vishal’s roles as the lead actor and the director. The VFX is sometimes subpar. GV Prakash Kumar’s music and background score runs the risk of becoming monotonous. The film’s third-quarter drama is very average, as it lacks the necessary gravitas. The story needed stronger characterization and a more nuanced approach to deliver on its promise of being a star-studded commercial entertainer.

Final verdict

Strictly for fans

Makutam turned out to be just another commercial potboiler that failed to live up to the hype surrounding Vishal’s directorial debut. Despite the interval drama and the first-half action sequences, the film’s second half failed to deliver on several counts. The film’s lack of characterization and generic narrative did little to elevate its star power.

A generic action drama that fails to make Vishal’s directorial debut anything special.
